In today’s Wall Street Journal, you can find an article discussing the future of e-mail communications and how social networks are changing the way we communicate with others.
The article, The Email Reign Is Over , begins with the following paragraph:
“Email has had a good run as king of communications, but its reign is over. In its place, a new generation of services is starting to take hold— Twitter, Facebook and countless others. And just as email did, this shift promises to profoundly rewrite the way we communicate—in ways we can only begin to imagine.”
How do you feel about the changes discussed in this article? What kind of impact do you think these changes will have in the business environment? More specifically, in the way firms conduct business with consumers in the United States?

The business environment will change drastically in the way they operate; from having small internal group who makes decisions to having expansive external business social network outside the internal environment to discuss various possibilities and could finally come up with the best choice of business idea from which the company is considering. This fact is supported by Jane Roberts’ article in The Commercial Appeal where she posted views of various prominent figures in business including Dave Barger, President and Chief Executive of LunaWeb Inc who agrees with this sentiment as well as other positive attributes of social networks for business including using the social network to hire highly capable employees. I believe that this change has already begun and is on the way to completely alter how people do business.
The way I feel concerning this article is nothing different because I could see this happening. I see on those websites major advertising and it does get my attention so to globaly rectify the way the world revolves around the internet, its a smart shift. Why advertise on websites where no consumers ever go on? Its kind of ironic. The impact I think will be made if consumers buy online more is less jobs for people in stores. Business will cut down on operations such as stores. So, even though it is more convenient for consumers the reality of it is a win-lose situation.
Face-book, Linked-in, Twitter, and so many other “communicating websites” have made quite an impact. Changes in the business environment have already begun to take shape with these means of communication. Take “AIM” for example (instant messaging). More and more companies began using this source to communicate with others anywhere in workforce. This cut down both time and money drastically. Employees no longer had to make petty phone calls to contact certain people–as long someone is at their desk (where they belong) everyday tasks were now found to be much easier and less time consuming. Even information was available to be sent through this “new” technological plain. Now look at email, what used to the pinnacle of tech communication is soon becoming more obsolete–limited memory for sending documents, long email addresses always followed by a .com or .net etc. With the use of Linked-in and other similar sites, communication with certain people is easy as a “friend request.” And the information needed to find someone is as simple as a “full name” search. Instant messaging is also available via Linked-in, as is a descriptive view of qualifications and experience.
Face-book, Linked-in, Twitter, etc. are also becoming more readily available and compatible with cell phones for even faster communication. Soon enough, I think that cell phone companies will start manufacturing cell phones that are more Face-book, Linked-in, or Twitter savvy. Similar to the Blackberry being solely designed to grant people instant access to their email accounts, a Face-book/Linked-in/Twitter phone MUST be in the making, aside from its friendly software. Email is whimpering away, and the new “communication websites” will further dominate the industry.
Before we Can talk about the future of e-mails, we need to talk about it’s history. E-mail is much older than ARPARnet or the internet itself. E-mails were never invented they evolved with a very simple beginning. The early e-mail was just a small advance on what we know these days as a file directory. It just put a message in another user’s directory in a spot where they could see it when they logged in. Simple as that. Just like leaving a note on someone’s desk. Before internet working began, e-mails could only be used to send messages to various users of the same computer. once computers began to talk to each other over networks, however, the problem became a little more complex. we needed to be able to put a message in an envelope and address it. To do this we needed a means to indicate to whom letters should go that the electronic posties understood just like the postal system. we needed a way to indicate an address. So as long as people need to communicate to each other it seems to me that e-mail is here to stay. Mailing letters will soon be a thing of the past.
There is no question that services like Twitter, Facebook, and others to come are obviously a new way of communicating over the internet, however, I think it is safe to say that E-mail is here to stay. Sites like Twitter and Facebook that allow a sort of “instant gratification” feel to sending information out on the internet certainly have their advantages, but it can be quite obvious that they also have their disadvantages as well. For instance, in one section of the WSJ article, they say; “Another obvious downside to the constant stream: It’s a constant stream… Information overload can lead some people to tune out messages altogether.” I don’t think this could be more true. While I think it is nice to be able to see if your friends are doing well, or if they have some nice plans for the week, most information just seems redundant and unnecessary. Why do I care if so-and-so desperately needs to take a shower, cause they are “super sweaty and smelly,” or if someones having macaroni and cheese for dinner? (Actual examples taken from Twitter/Facebook). I don’t want a play-by-play of everyone’s day.
E-mail has its own advantages. Some people can’t update their schedule at their every whim, nor would they want to. Being able to check your E-mail daily is sufficient enough for many people. Business deals/friendly chatter/many other things are conducted over E-mail, and probably will always be. When E-mail and other forms of internet messaging came into the picture, I’m sure many people thought traditional letters and paper mail would become obsolete, but that has not happened. I feel that E-mail has made its mark and is more than likely here to stay.
I believe that with the emerge of so many communication options the email reign its not over. I think that these changes won’t have any changes in the business environment because instant messaging has already become commonly accepted in many business corporations. According to bMighty.com “sites, such as MySpace and Facebook, have gained mainstream acceptance. So, it’s not surprising that business social networking sites have also been popping up”. I think they are simple and secure methods of exchanging information but business people will still rely on emails to exchange information electronically. New communications systems have emerged, they appeal different to every user, and they will be in used more instead of e-mail. Anyways I think, e-mail still has the broadest range of supporters and will continue to be the primary communications system for most business companies to conduct business with customers in the United States.
The e-mail – social network shift has been happening since Facebook opened to more people than just college students and most of the younger generations have already adjusted with the shift. The business environment will have to mold itself to fit, but they will also have feedback from customers and the possibility for instant answers to their customers. Technology saavy businesses make it farther with the younger crowd than the older generations but if they want to keep the older generations as customers, they also have to have the older technology that they are used to. Keeping up with all generations can be challenging but any company that wishes to succeed will decide to keep up with the changes and stay current but still have the older technology that is still frequently used. The shift will happen faster now that the businesses are aware of the younger generations habits.
This generation is all about easier, faster, the better and that is what killed e-mail. E-mail only lets you type paragraph by paragraph and offer no other entertainment value. Facebook allows you to chat with multiple people at the same time while updating pictures, status and many other things. Twitter allows you to post your opinions on major subjects all day that you can affect while also allowing you to update your Facebook and Myspace status simultaneously. From a business perspective you can market and advertize and personalize all of your pages for free. Constantly updating your product information to alert consumers of what they can get with your company. It will be interesting to see if they eventually start charging for these excellent services but companies should jump on these free advertizing outlets while they are.
I agree and disagree with the article. There are so many new communication options out there that the use of email will die down but the reign of email is not over completely. The use of email resembles a home base or back up to other forms of communication. In the business enviornment the use of emails have stayed steady considering all of the other communication options available. Firms conducting business has shown to be the only type of business that communicates via applications and other “texts” besides email but it is still used. So in conclusion even though emails have fallen out of the main stream of communication the reign of emails is not over.
Will email still matter in the coming years? Absolutely! The unprecedented and rapid growth and impact of email with its growing and improving features will constantly evolve and garner significant respects in the future. However there may be some threat to its future use. It’s unquestionable then that surely we will foresee the growing success of email as the primary hub for communication, media and networking in the future. Indeed electronic mailing catapulted the unsettling success of information technology with it’s generativly and innovative character. It has gained a respective mainstream acceptance from the people and this acceptance will be the bread and butter of its’ future and will determine its life span as the provider of secure methods of communication
This article makes a lot of sense and has good foresight of the future.
Technology is constantly evolving. I remember when I was younger my parents didn’t even have cell phones. Now I look and see a 13 year old kid with a nicer phone than I have. Seeing this really makes me see how the way we communicate has grown in leaps and bounds in just a few recent years. This means a lot to businesses. With all these new communication tools there are now so many more ways to reach customers. Small businesses can now sell products for people thousands of miles away. Companies are going global now as well. Since communication between people is essential for business, the radical advancement in communication technology will grow businesses worldwide by staggering numbers.
Email may not be as popular as it used to be but it is still used everyday. The social networking web pages have to be activated with a valid email and the social networks send you a notification email to let you know when something has occurred on your page. I believe that status updates and other things like that make it easier to know what someone is doing rather than calling the but as discussed in the article people tend to watch what they say do to the accessibility people have to read it. I think that the business environment will adapt to make simple communications over these social networks such as setting up meetings or seeing how clients are but not having in depth conversation with personal information involved. Companies will have to keep up with the easier instant conversations to keep people interested especially younger generations but I believe email will still be used as well to send documents and inform people about important information. This is why I believe email will never be completely gone or unused.
I feel the artical has a point, e-mails only tell you what the other person is saying were as, through Twitter or Facebook, you can actually tell where the person is and what he or she is doing. For the most part, the information will be true because it will be posted up for all their friends and family to see. Although, when someone with higher authority at a company messages an employee on Facebook, they need to be aware that the employee will be able to track his or her adventures as well.
There are many impacts disscussed in this artical but one i like is keeping employees apprised of how the company is doing. I think this is a great way to keep the workforce strong and keep the employees motivated. Giving about $25,000 to rich people just to picth your ideas at them to see if it’s any good isn’t something I would do or advice. They pay nothing and might demotivate you to further expand your idea or invention, if you’re motivated about it, go for it, don’t let the rich guys push you down!
Email has gotten so big that everyone is doing it. This is a way for people to save time, if you don’t have any time at all. This is how I communicate with my teachers and family all the time. Email is the easiest thing to use. In August 2008 to 2009 it had gone up 31% in people using email everyday. then there are other ways of communication with friends and family like Instant messaging and video chat. Everything is changing for the best. People are too busy to call someone and get information. Takes to long.
When businesses have meeting they are either video chat or phone conferencing. It is environmentally friendly because no one needs to travel anyway anymore. It saves gas and helps the client just in case they can’t go anywhere. This is more convenient for everyone. I would do this for sure if we needed to do a meeting with a big client. You could get a client that is on the west coast for more business across the United States.
In the business world, email will never “phase out” due to the social networking era but it will adapt. People now can send quick notes or comments to friends or co-workers through social networking sites such as facebook or twitter and there isn’t a need to send an email when you can get that immediate response. For businesses, they don’t want there information in emails available for everyone to see which is why email cannot be replaced. In certain business transactions it’s possible you don’t want the person on the other side of the transaction knowing too much about you because it may influence them in a negative way which is why email is still very important. Overall, yes there are changes in the way people communicate personally but I think for businesses the confidentiality and professionalism is still preferred and will never go away.
I feel no one communicates via e-mail anymore. I can’t even remember the last time someone sent me something to my aol e-mail. Ever since MySpace launched communicating has been a lot easier. Then Facebook came out, which at first was only for college students. Now people are using MySpace and Facebook to become known, and use it to network their modeling, make-up artistry, photography, etc. I think this will impact the business environment in a positive way. People are able to network and basically communicate much faster. Businesses are advertising there products on there as well. When something new comes out Facebook notifies me on my home page. On the other hand, Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace are pointless when it comes to people posting a different status every five minutes. It gets wicked annoying when someone just wants you to know they’re “@ the gym”. Then there “home” in an hour. Really? No one cares about that. So tweeting is stupid, hopefully people will stop doing that. Also, when people have inappropriate photos that are “tagged” it’s probably not good to be friends with a manager at your work, because they’ll think inadequately of you. That is why I believe communicating via comments on Facebook and MySpace will be a better method to get in touch with someone rather then E-mail.
As this article make valid points regarding the future of internet communication, I believe it is putting the valuable asset of email into an early grave. The social networking websites mentioned, Facebook and Twitter, are both offered free of charge and are both vastly growing in popularity. Facebook even offers an internal messaging system to its users mimicking email but you must be a subscriber of the site to us it. Email is provided through many different companies, several of them are free of charge including Hotmail, and Gmail, Google’s service, and is still the seemingly more professionally and universal way of communicating electronically. However, this is not say Facebook will never overtake general email service, being worth about $3.7 billion dollars according to CBS News, Facebook is a viable, competitive force against old fashioned Email and may lure the business world into a social networking website that was once just a teenage hobby.
The article tells key points into the inside world of new advertisement. Many businesses are using new ways to get in touch with consumers, such as facebook, twitter, and others. Alot of business leaders are realizing the benefits in doing this. Not only are businesses expanding the name of the pruduct, alot of times these programs are free. Programs like twitter alow users to have a constant stream of interaction with users, usually for the better but sometimes for the worse. Face book is another program, more like a social net work. This also alows a constant stream of interaction among many users at the same time.
“Why Email No Longer Rules… And what that means for the way we communicate?” this is the question that has been post on Wall Street Journal last week. The first time I saw the article I was so surprise because I never thought that Email is no longer for us. On the other hand, they changed to used Twitter or Facebook instead of email. This is not true at all because the study found that only 12% of online adults said they’d be willing to provide social media information (like a Twitter handle or Facebook name) to markers online, while 96% of those surveyed had provided their email to brands to receive special promotions or more information.
According to a new study by Pontiflex, marketers are finding consumers much more willing to share information via email than social media, meaning that email is still an integral tool in marketing campaigns. Also in the business environment, I believed that most of the companies still prefer using email than twitter because using email is more secure and privacy than other.
Even the Wall Street Journal article that pronounced email’s death admits that usage of the service continues to grow. Services like Twitter, Facebook and instant messenger are growing at a faster pace, but they have a lot further to go to reach email usage rates. And the day email is officially “dead” is still far off on the horizon.
E-mail has well served its purpose but it is slowly becoming a thing of the past. With all these social-networkin websites and real time updates, no one wants to wait around for e-mails anymore, even our cell phones and PDA’s are partnering up with these websites so that you can recieve updates right on your phone. Yes it has become a great way to keep intouch with friends, family, and other people in your personal life, but it has to be just that personal, I don’t think its appropriate for the business world. These social-networking sites like facebook and twitter have more of a casual and relaxed feeling, not something I think would be appropriate in a work envoirnment. With the Wall Street Journals announcement of the end of e-mails “reign”, it no longer stands a chance.
Looking towards the future I do believe E-mail won’t be used as much as its used today, because there are websites out there that are already competing with E-mail. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter are able to help people communicate almost instantly rather than taking your time to check your E-mail. I do think that the work environment will benefit a lot from this because people now a day look for ways that are less time consuming. Im convinced that the way we now communicate will change and that it will definitely affect the work environment in the future. I don’t think our way of communicating via E-mail is going to stop, I just believe that it’s going to be use less often compared to how it’s used now a day.
I feel that Email and Facebook or any other services have their advantages and disadvantages in the business world. Email is a one on one conversation through writing and it’s a fast way to contact people for quick response. The email you sent will only be read within the two people instead of others reading it too. For instance on Facebook, if you were to post a comment on a friend page others can read it too. There is no privacy at all unless you change the setting. What happens if your company has a facebook and the business you work with found you on facebook and looked through your friend list. They then see the people who you are working with and try to steal businesses from you. Although there are disadvantages there are advantages to it too. People can advertise by putting their product online to sell. The services out there are very easy to use and usually free to sign up. Nowadays people either have a facebook or twitter page. I feel it should be taken advantage and use properly for their own benefit.
Apparently, The article “The email reign is over” by the Wall Street Journal could be taken in different ways, but I personally don’t agree with the article, even though the number tell us otherwise. However, Email marketers are facing new challenges with an increasingly social networking, but Email portability adoption is increasing. According to David Daniels of Forrester Research, Email is not dying because of social media. “Email is still a key tool in social communication”, and “Understanding audience engagement is key.” For example, just this week Google launched email syncing for Gmail to smartphones (meaning iPhone users can get their gmail accounts synced between their iPhone and their PC). This will make it easier for iPhone users to keep up with their accounts on the go.
In conclusion, ask yourself this question: is the email business environment changing? Yes, without a doubt. Social media has become a very large part of the online lives for many Internet users. Earlier this year, social sites were even said to have surpassed email in usage. That said, Facebook has come significantly close to matching Google in terms of unique visitors, but that doesn’t make Google any less important does it? The two can co-exist, and so can email and social media. They are co-existing.
I agree completely with the article when it comes to strictly social communication. But I do not agree with emailing become an ice age tool for when it comes to business.
Emailing is boring, singled out, and takes too long. We live in the now, and we want everything now. Facebook is directly connected with everyone who you know at the same time, in real time (just like Twitter). As the article says, you don’t have to wait hours, or days for a reply to an email. Social Networking sites lay it all out in front of you. While the user is prone to security issues, this however should be common knowledge that a person should not update their Facebook status with “won’t b home 4 the wknd, house is empyyy lol!” I would also like to add that Myspace (the dying breed) Facebook, and Twitter are amazing advertising tools. There are millions of bored users ready to click anything.
I personally believe, however, that email is a great tool for businesses. It’s a fact that the more information a manager has, the less risk there is of making an incorrect decision. Groupware software enables management and employees to help achieve a common goal, because they are connected and can collaborate together, as a team. The Internet can easily be used to link text, photo, numerical data, graphs and even audio clips, where data can be stored and sent elsewhere, to be opened with out rewriting, etc. Firms are also able to distribute information internally. The Internet is also a great tool for allowing the consumer to stay in contact with a firm, potentially offering their opinions on ways to help the company grow and assist in productive sales and connections with the common consumer.
I personally do not see email (as in @ and .com) going anywhere for some time. Will they eventually be replaced? Sure, why not? But for now, email is safe where it stands.
Email is defiantly a thing of the past. Email was a revolutionary idea that has changed the world forever. Email was originally designed for a stationary at home computer and work more like a digital mail service. But Currently with all the portable communication devices and smart phones email is becoming obsolete. In the future people will be able to contact each other by a digital message to their portable device. Email will move more from the mail to instant communication. I already never check my email but contact people either on my phone or threw a social network site.
Facebook and twitter in my own opinion will not replace email. Facebook keeps friends and family members connected, and when on twitter only a certain number of words are allowed to be written. “Now, we are always connected, whether we are sitting at a desk or on a mobile phone” (wallstreet journal), but that does not mean that this will have a large impact on business. The average age of people on facebook is around the age of 21 (college students), according to a recent survey on yahoo, so therefore business will not be greatly impacted; college students do not have much money because they are in debt from student loans. Facebook and twitter will not replace email at anytime in the near future.
I believe that e-mailing will still exists even though Facebook, twiitter, and Myspace is receiving more accounts from people each day to communicate with friends and family. E-mailing will definitely still exist especially for college students. Students write papers everyday and sometimes don’t turn it in to the professor on time. The only option they have to receive full credit is to email the assignment to the professor before its to late.
Personally, I think Facebook is more competitive than emailing because its the fastest way to keep in contact with people around the world that has Facebook accounts. Also, they create a lot of advertisements to get peoples attention.
How do you feel about the changes discussed in this article? What kind of impact do you think these changes will have in the business environment? More specifically, in the way firms conduct business with consumers in the United States?
I think the “new” way of communication is better. In my generation I dont know of too many people who e-mail, myself, I have probably e-mailed a handful of times and barely no how to. With the new sites such as facebook and twitter you are always connected. Just like the article said, wheather you are at your desk, driving, or sitting at home, you are always connected and can recieve e-mails no matter what. People have blackberries now that keep you connected all day everyday. I think the new sites are also better for companies too because they can get updates just by one click of a button, or get in contact with someone a lot easier than having to write an e-mail and waiting on a response. I definitely think the new ways of communication are better because even now if you think of it, writing an e-mail is pretty much a hassel.
When looking at my communication today, i use my e-mail substantially less than i use my facebook. I feel that people are more keen to check their email mabay about once a day, where as people tend to check their facebook or twitter pages multiple time a day, especially the younger generations. According to the article “The Email Reign is Over” on the Wall Street Journal, it stated that in August 2009, 276.9 million people used email across the U.S and in several European countries. Australia and Brazil, according to Nielsen Co., were up 21% from 229.2 million in August 2008. But the number of users on social-networking and other community sites jumped 31% to 301.5 million people. This clearly shows that even though email still exists, more and more people are choosing social networking sites such as facebook and twitter over traditional email. I know that I myself check my email mabay every couple days while I log onto my facebook about at least twice a day. When looking at the impact that these sites have on the business world, you can already tell that business are beginning to create their own social networking pages, especially on facebook. This enable the businesses to get themselves out there and attract attention for themselves. Facebook also gives businesses the opportunity to advertise on there site. I still feel that most businesses will still use email over social networking sites because it is a more proper way to conduct tasks and contact employees and clients. I firmly believe though that most of the social networking sites are more geared towards the younger age group where as people of older statue are more likely to use the email as their way of communication. In the end email will still be used by most people of all ages as a form of communication, but when looking at the numbers you can clearly see that social networking sites are giving email producers, a run for there money
I belie that the email is definitely over with all these new sites coming out. Facebook and twitter has become a new phenomenon. These sites let people know what you’re doing every single second. So instead of asking someone what they are doing the just go check there update on facebook or twitter. A lot of companies are using these sites to let customers know what kind of deals they are offering or updating you in some events. I believe these changes are for the good a lot of people have these sites and its way easier and fun to use these sites. Instead of waiting for a reply u just IM someone or send them a facebook message which they would probably check before their email. These changes will have a huge impact on the business environment they’ll will expand their marketing and put the business out there by just updating their statuses on deals they are offering letting everyone know what they have to offer. Having a facebook, twitter or any social network site benefits a lot for business firms, they would have more sale increase and have a fun way to communicate with their co workers.
The changes discussed in this article have to be good changes towards the people’s convenience or else why would they even bother changing them? If someone makes a way for someone to communicate with someone else in a convenient way such as: sending messages, sending files or other forms of information, giving live updates, and organize your thoughts, then it’s understandable for the majority to devote their time and rely on this method. Seeing this trend, companies will also flock to the said program in hopes of catching the eyes of the consumer, showing in a way that they relate to them and they are also there to help the people’s needs. It’s basic business, knowing to advertise where the most people gather. This is why I feel that, in a business sense, these changes can be beneficial to those who are willing to use it, though I personally don’t use twitter or facebook.
Maybe e-mail’s reign as the “king of communication” is over, but I don’t believe it will ever stop being a principal means of communication. Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter have taken over as the most widely used method of contact with others. It provides us with instant contact to others and allows us to see what friends are doing or what companies are coming out with at the moment. However, their disadvantages are the reason that e-mail will never become obsolete. Not everyone wants to have a page for others to learn about their personal life, family, friends, hobbies, etc. Especially for people with professional corporate jobs who don’t necessairly want co-workers or management seeing pictures of them Saturday night at the bar — riding the mechanical bull. For the people who don’t want to put their personal life out in the open, e-mail is what they will continue to use. E-mail also provides people with privacy to communicate with an individual or a specific group of people, while anyone can see what you’re saying or doing on the networking sites.
Another downfall of Facebook ar Twitter is that you are constantly being updated with a play-by-play of everyone’s lives. How important are you, honestly, that people need to know when you go in the shower, or where you are every hour of the day? With people knowing all of this information about friends and family, they are gradually eliminating human contact from their lives since they have no need to call each other or go see each other because all they have to do is look online to find out what everyone is doing.
There are pros and cons to the new technology of communicating with others, but it really depends on the person using the site and who you “add” as a “friend”. Its important that you don’t give out your personal information and location to all the crazy people out there. I’m always going to stick to e-mail for my personal life and for private conversations I don’t want others reading. Networking sites make it too easy for psychos to find you and your family and to commit the crimes we hear about everyday.
I believe that email will always have a place in the business environment; socially, it does not stand a chance. Pre-teens, teens, young adults, even adults use social networks like Facebook and Twitter daily to communicate with friends and family casually. The biggest difference between email and social networks is that these networks allow members to post personal pictures, their interests and other private information that is simply inappropriate and unprofessional for business purposes, unlike email. Although, according to Nielsen Online “From December 2007 to December 2008, social networks or blogs account for nearly 10% of all Internet time, and the ‘Member Communities’ category of sites surpassed the email category in Internet popularity, measured by time on site.” Even after considering this, email may be down, but it is not out!
The way communication is used is has been changing throughout the years and I agree with the article for the fact that I barely use my email account to communicate with people. People now a days want to communicate faster for different purposes and business will want to get to the habit of quicker communication to better improve their business. E-Mailing starts a conversation with one person but with Twitter and Facebook businesses can get opinions and ideas from many people at the same time. Businesses will forever stay connected to consumers and can make better relationships with that consumer and not have to worry about losing them for the fact that they stay in communication with that consumer. E-Mails have their own advantages in certain categories and would still probably be used for certain importance’s.
Social Networking sites such as “Facebook” has not necessarily replaced the email communication era, it appears to be a more side stepped evolutionary way of innovative communication. According to PCworld.com in an article called “Social Networks War Shows Facebook Dominant, Twitter Gaining” It has been reported that Facebook is considered number 1 in the social network market for 2009 stating that “Facebook nailed down 58.6 percent of all U.S visits to social networking sites in September”. Though, it does show much amazing and brilliant progress; it does draw questions, such as, when will social networks sites like “Facebook” hit its peek and when it does and people will be ready to move on what will be the next innovative idea that will take its place?. Overall social network sites are great examples of how our world has dramatically changed. But for certain, this will most likely pass and another idea will arise to take on the next trend of our extraordinary technological advancements.
I feel there wouldn be changes to the business enviroment do to new things like twitter, facebook or myspace. One reason is beacuse email is not a new thing to the business world, we have had email for quite sometime; The new things that have been added to facebook and others are pictures, stautes, live chat, groups and much more. In a way facebook is just another way to chat with anyone you know or want to know with out the wait of emailing. I don’t feel that the emailing process has gotten any quicker because of facebook because you still have to sign in and check your email just as anyother email system. But it has made a better way to communicate with others with out the emailing process of waiting. Facebook and twitter have given them selfs a good name and i do think they would be able to change the business enviroment.
Facebook and Twitters are becoming more and more practical these days than email, specially with the grown in technology. Nowadays, the social websites are being used even as for advertisements, you can easily send a post and thousands or even billion are seeing it in a fraction of second. The other thing about FB and Twitters, they give you another side of someone’s life, you can view a load of pictures from what they have done, when for e-mail it is kind of limited; because you can not send any amount of pictures you want via e-mail. On top of that, I think we the consumers are the one who choose between the social websites and emails. I think it takes more time email than sending a twitt; and while on Twitter or FB, you can talk to someone live. Some of us spend much more time on those websites, the interesting part about it is that you can meet people that you haven’t seen in years, which is different for e-mails. To think of it, I will always think that twitter or Facebook are better, they are way more interesting and more fun than just sitting down and respond to e-mails.
The facebook, Myspace or twitters replace the e-mail. I think is still many people use the e-mail every single day. people still communicate by e-mail or faceboo and other. youth dont like e-mail because email is not the fastest way to communicate. many business still using e-mail every single day. I almost get advertising by e-mail. Right now the facebook is number one for communicate with your friends or unknow people. i always think that facebook or twitter is more interesting than e-mail because in Facebook you also could see your friends pictures. communicating in facebook is amazing.
It is extremely possible that the run for E-mail could be winding down. I don’t think e-mail will ever completely wind down but it is no longer the forefront for people as well as business’ to communicate. Certain other means of communication can make it easier to communicate such as facebook, myspace, twitter, or AIM. All these things are very popular and easier means of communication. An article in the Wall Street Journal a woman was quoted as saying “One of the reasons I love Twitter is that I don’t have to open up emails to read what someone has replied or direct messaged me”. These other options are easier and can be quickly accessible with cellular phones or on any other mobile devices. And people are always checking their twitter or changing their status which makes quicker communication. The same way e-mail changed the way we communicate, its time is soon to be over and other services will takeover as means of communication. Using the other services such as instant messaging makes it quicker to get a response rather than keep checking your email the response shows right up. Also a person facebook status tells al lot of the answers you may have about a person. This is the impact I belive facebook, twitter and other services like this will make it hard for email to ever be as popular as it was a decade ago.
How do you feel about the changes discussed in this article? What kind of impact do you think these changes will have in the business environment? More specifically, in the way firms conduct business with consumers in the United States?
The changes discussed in the article are very true. In this time period, people of all ages are connected to Facebook, Twitter, and all sorts of other sites used for “communication. These changes will make a very big impact on the business environment. According to the Wall Street Journal, “people were frustrated when it took days for an email to arrive.” This change and advancement in technology has helped companies improve their production line. It is now easier for other businesses to conduct trades with the United States. We are the greatest consumers around. These communication websites have sped up our trades and made them more efficiently possible.
Changes is inevitable in any situation especially in the business communication. Just like memos and mails use to be the primary means of communication. Then emails and instance messages came and is about to be obsolete. In business communication there is no limit to what the computer technology can do. The possibilities are endless in the development of relating to one another, both in our personal and the business world. Emails, Face book and other social networks have tremendously improve the way business and communications works. Likewise many other technologies and innovations in these area are on the pipelines. Consumers will likely benefit more as the new changes in the communications evolves. It will be faster and more efficient to do business than what is currently out there.
I do not think the email reign is over, however I do think that twitter and others like it will be used more and more. Efrain Baez who responded to the WSJ article said, “If you think about it, people are more likely to buy a product/service if it is recommended by a friend or an actual person who used it; not a billboard. So, in the world of business, where word of mouth accounts for a lot of business (or lack of, depending on how good/bad the service/product was), Twitter and Facebook are just getting started. If you are a business owner or manage a business, thinking Facebook and Twitter are dying trends will give you a huge disadvantage in a world where “everyone” is talking about something. And if something is great, and they have hundreds and hundreds of followers, doesn’t that give you a better “ROI” in advertising dollars for something you didn’t spend a dime on?” Twitter and Facebook are great, however people still need email for more detailed or personal communication.
First of all I do not think the e-mail is ever going to end. Because e-mail is more private than the facebook, twitter and various others. Second, as far as i know i do not think one can send files and other attachments like in e-mail. But if it is true than i think it will have a huge impact on the businesses unless the facebook, twitter and other ways of communications come up with the idea of keeping it more personal. Facebook and twitter are designed for the specific group of people for ex, students and other young people not for the business purpose. It is not private enough for the business use. All the communications can be seen by others. In facebook any thing you say or put on your profile can be seen by your friends. So if you want to talk just to your boss then it is not the best alternative. I think facebook and twitter are a great ways to communicate for casual talk, but as for the business purpose e-mail is the best option since it is more private and more secured.
I believe the advance in technology will slowly kill of email. With sites like facebook and twitter is a fast way to communicate to everyone and anyone you want to for example businesses could use theses sites to get customer feeback on their products. Another way people that people communicate now a days is through text messages or instant messages this is basically email but you are talking to the person in a conversation instead of sitting around waiting for a reply email. Now a days everything can be done mobilely like on your cell phone or pda this makes the way of communication so much faster. I just believe that email is dying out.
I believe that this article has some valid points and that email is dying with the rise of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. I for one still use my email, and do not have facebook or twitter or anything like that. I think that certain generations use the sites for different reasons such as; networking ( for the older generations) and just a social site (for the younger generations.) From personal knowledge, I know several businesses will go and look on facebook to see if you have an account, and will not hire you because of it. Also people in my generations put too much information up there which is a turn off to companies. It may be a good way for companies to communicate with their customers because it is an instant way of communications, and emails are not being used the way the used to because they are becoming time consuming.
The creation of Facebook and Twitter has changed the way that people and businesses communicate, however I don’t believe that these social networks replace e-mail in the way that a business communicates with customers. Twitter According to the same article, “An obvious downside to the constant stream: It’s a constant stream”, which means that because of so many messages being constantly sent, it will be easier for the people to ignore unwanted information. Twitter has provided companies to have a quicker form of communication for changes in projects. Facebook has allowed people to post pictures from a vacation on their profile instead of having to prepare and send messages to everyone they know. Facebook, Tweeter, and the other social networks are changing the way what everyone in the wold communicates.
I believe that email may have lost its spot as the most efficient way to communicate in this era to other forums such as Twitter and Facebook, but that still doesn’t mean that it’ll completely go away. Email still has a home in the business world in that it replaced letters and interoffice memos. To think that things like Twitter and Facebook, which are very popular means of social networking and keeping people up to date with things happening to other people. They still can’t completely take email’s place because of one major factor, email has set itself up as the main means of sending and receiving files and information for professionals of all kinds. In short, Facebook and Twitter are great for keeping in touch with a wide group of people, but email still has not just a professional feel to it but a personal touch as well, and I don’t see it completely going to way of snail mail.
In my opinion Facebook of Twitter will never replace e-mail. E-mail is what so many people depend on for staying in touch with each other. I don’t see the business environment changing much more than it already has, both Facebook and Twitter have a lot of advertisements on them. Facebook already has a targeted advertising system, where they determine which ads you will see based on your information that you give out. I do not like the idea of businesses using friend networking sites because they try so sell you things while pretending to be your firend.Until the next big breakthrough in Internet communication e-mail is here to stay.
I personally think that these changes won’t have a major impact on email in the business environment, but it will never seize from growing due to the amount of people that interact on those social networking sites daily. An article on “InsideFacebook.com- States that Facebook has hit the 175,000,000 active user mark, just 5 weeks after it hit 150 million users in January. At this rate, Facebook has been growing by well over 600,000 users per day over the last several weeks, continuing the company’s torrid growth pace.” And the same goes for Twitter and Myspace. Email was never invented it evolved; Early email was just a small advance on what we know these days as a file directory, it just puts a message in another user’s directory in a spot where they could see it when they logged in. Just like leaving a note on someone’s desk. So maybe sometime in the near future the entire social network industry would come together and evolve into something that we would call the “New Email”; Otherwise email is in it to win it.
I feel that people are going to see a decrease in people using e-mail to communicate with family and close friends. But I also think that e-mail will always be a big part of how companies communicate internally from co-worker to co-worker or boss. Unless somebody invents a social network similar to Facebook and Twitter that is specifically for companies. I feel that Facebook and Twitter are wonderful social networks for people to communicate to each other. But I could never see companies using something similar to twitter to conduct business. I feel that e-mail is more suitable for companies to use.
