Week of October 5th, 2009. What kind of business ideas can succeed in a recession?

Some great ideas on generating long term sustainable economic growth were posted last week. I noticed that most bloggers talked about government intervention, either using fiscal policy or government spending to generate long term economic growth. Let’s assume for this blog that we don’t need to worry about government, taxation, or credit markets. In addition, let’s assume that this economic slowdown will last longer than anticipated. Under these conditions, is it possible to start a profitable business?

If you do a little research, you will find that some of the greatest business ideas were launched during a recession. Remember that solving society’s problems can be profitable! Can you find companies that are doing just that this time around?

During this time of recession, there are many companies that have going down. On the other hand, there are a small nummber of businesses that are still making money. Businesses like CyberSource Corp. had an 11% climb on Thursday according to the Wall Street Journal. This was due to the high buying by the investors. Another business that has gone up especially at this time frame is video game companies. Once again according the the reliable Wall Street Journal video gaming has gone up since its 6 month decrease. These are for the most part online businesses and the viedo gaming one is made by people at home. These kind of businesses are small ones. Small businesses are making money during this time of recession.

There are many businesses that become extremely profitable when launched during a recession. An example of one of these businesses is a consignment shop. During difficult economic times, people are more likely to bring their old clothes to a consignment shop, rather than donating them or throwing them away. I am one of these people. After each season, I make a pile of all the clothes in my closet that I don’t wear, and I bring them to the thrift store. Many of these items, believe it or not, still have tags on them. Once they sell at the store, I receive half of what each item sold for. This is such an easy way to make extra money. On the other hand, there are many people who shop at these stores before going to the mall, where similar items will be much more expensive. Many nice things can be found in a consignment shop, including designer clothes and bags. People who are seriously affected by the recession can save a lot more money when buying from a consignment shop. When the economy is suffering financially, a consignment shop is a business that has a lot of potential to thrive.

Recessions can be difficult for businesses to survive through, and its even harder for a buisness to thrive through a recession, but i have found a couple of buisnesses a recession wont efect or maybe even help in these hard times. According to HRWorld, buisnesses in health care do fine in a recession because people will always get sick, sometimes even more so when they don’t have the insurance or money to take preventative measures or eat healthy food. Another business that would do well in a recession according to HRWorld are funerals. Just like people won’t stop getting sick, they’ll continue to die as well, it’s sad but it’s a fact. So recessions are not always bad for all businesses.

I believe that businesses can still succeed during a recession. Businesses that are inexpensive, have low costs, are dedicated and satisfy their customers needs will be the top businesses during a recession. Any business can succeed during these hard times as long as businesses owners research what their customers want during these times. About.com states that during a recession people have time to put into their businesses, and go forward with new invention and ideas. The dedication and time spent researching could possibly pay off in the end.

One new idea I found that has been created since the recession started is by a company called thredUp. In an article on the website Springwise, Your Daily Fix of Entrepreneurial Ideas they tell about this new idea, “There are businesses that allow consumers to buy, sell, rent and trade used clothing, including OUR Threads and Closet Infinite. Providing a slightly different twist on the notion, however, is Thredup, which uses a Netflix-like model with prepaid envelopes to help users swap the clothes they don’t wear for some they will. ThredUP already ties in nicely with the sellsumer trend, giving recession-weary consumers a way to make the most of what they have.” I think this is a great idea and if enough people hear about it I think it will be a success.

A business with a good planning stratagy may be able to withstand the current economic downfall. But a business that can keep coming up with great ideas to implement into the market, that should give the company a chance to survive. Ultimatly giving the company sustainability if the company can keep surving year after year. All in all i think that unique and untouched ideas maybe favorable within a recession period. the current ideas that are floating around out there now arent working, So seeking for a new inovative idea can defenitly help a recession.

While I couldn’t find any companies with solutions for society’s problems, I did find out that some online systems are helping big companies trim down on expenses. According to an article in the inquirer.net site, there is an online recruiting platform that companies can use instead of using expensive HR search consultancies. These online systems are a good, cost-effective idea for large companies so the people who made them really had a good plan in making them. Though it is a great idea, what makes it so cost-effective is that now the companies won’t have to hire a lot of people that they normally would have if the online system wasn’t created. Sometimes when it comes to creating solutions to problems of others, there could be a lot of downsides to it as well.

  8. Timbolonius says:

During times of recession and even during depressions, companies that specialize in fields that benefit society in some way generally tend to survive and even grow drastically amidst financial hardship. Currently, in this era, one of the main focus is clean energy like the lithium batteries that go into the hybrid cars and electric cars. In an article published by Yahoo cleantech is on track to be the dominant force in venture capital investments over the next few years, supplanting biotechnology and software. Venture capitalists have poured $8.7 billion into energy-related startups in the U.S. since 2006. So in short, the clean energy sector will see growth within the next year, given that the government, private investors, and large companies invest in the right clean energy companies.

It is hard for a start up business or any type of small business to survive during a recession. However there are many businesses that started during a recession. According to insidecrm.com in an article by Sarah Caron, there were 14 companies that started during a recession such as CNN, Microsoft Corp, FedEx Corp, IHOP Corp, Hyatt Corp, and Burger King. According to USA Today, Wal-Mart,and McDonalds, stores are still making profits and doing well. In order for start up companies to succeed they just need to produce products that people would want to buy and be in good financial state. I believe having more small successful businesses than big ones could help in getting out of the recession quicker because big companies can fall in the stock market can’t get back up and small businesses aren’t in th stock market

One type of industry that seems to still be growing in the recession is the health care industry. According to a recent article in BusinessWeek, 1.7 million new jobs have been added in the health-care sector since 2001, including related industries such as pharmaceuticals and health insurance. Take away health-care hiring in the U.S., and the unemployment rate would be 1 to 2 percent higher. Health care is highly labor intensive, so most of the nearly 2 trillion spent ends up in workers pockets. For these reasons, I think the health care industry is pretty recession proof.

  11. SerD.01960 says:

Despite the economy, there are still many companies that are doing great and even profiting from the bad economy. For example used book stores are doing great! I happen to work for a company that collects used, unwanted books from people, businesses, schools and libraries. Then we sell them online or at one of our 4 book stores that we opened over the last 1 and half years. I believe all this is thanks to the economy, before people would go in to stores such as Barns and Nobles or Borders and pay around $20.00 for one book. But at one of our used book stores they can get the same book for about $2.00 So if someone lost a job or had to take a pay cut, at least buying a $2.00 book is not going to put a dent in their wallet.

  12. dani.schneider says:

I believe business that are a “need” in people’s lives will succeed in recession times. According to MSNBC News, businesses like funeral homes safely assume that the recession won’t have much impact on deaths. MSNBC also had the same point of view on accountants, for people won’t stop paying their taxes as well. Health care companies generally do well during recessions because people get sick just as much in a recession. In conclusion, businesses and companies have to think of a product that people will always need to survive a recession.

  13. jnkwah says:

There is a a proverb that says out of lemon comes lemonade. Recession can be a very tough time for the large population, but it can also be a good time to make good money by embarking on a business that can be of benefitial to the society. One of the these business will be starting a consignment store. Consignment store is where one can find a good deal of fairly used items on a budget. Some of these items can be very expensive buying them new, but because it is fairly used the price can be very afordable thereby helping the society to save money. Buying a gararge sales and selling them on the e-bay can be a very profitable too While it solves the society’s problem. Church start up can be very good for the society in the sense that people need God when they are down and broke, at the same time can be a very profitable ventures. Real Estate business can be profitable and thrive well too if one can find it niche; first time homebuyers are suddendly spoil for choice, because prices are low due to forclosures. In conclusion, with a well written business plan, I think these mentioned ventures can be thriving and profitable while they solve the society’s problem.

  14. Sandrews says:

Even during a recession, companies that provide a positive benefit to society usually survive, and in some cases can even grow. Today the new trend is, “going green.” During this recession software companies can kill 2 birds with one stone. The company can develop a software to help with book keeping or paperwork, which can save your company money (less paper expenses, and perhaps less employee expenses). In a Yahoo article Cleantech, a environmentally friendly software and biotech company, seems like it is going to dominate venture capital investments. Over the last 3 years, over $8billion has been poured into the clean energy sector, and it is growing even during this recession.

  15. zillah says:

During the recession, a lot of people started home businesses like a food business, trading assistance, direct sales. These are all things that could help people out at their home and get money. People just adjusted to the current situation which was the recession. People that got laid off probably wanted to help others with what they needed and wanted to buy to help them with anything they needed. They can pocket the money they make and give some to the supplier.

  16. catastrophe says:

Despite the amount of businesses that are crashing, there are many that are still booming. Lets take a store like Wall-Mart for example. When people are losing their jobs, they need to find things at an affordable price. Stores like Wall-Mart are perfect for that. Not to mention it’s a one stop shop, meaning that you won’t have to waste gas traveling to other stores. During times like these people can’t afford to shop at all the high end stores for clothes, but that’s okay because Wall-Mart has recently teamed up with Miley Cyrus for a clothing line. Her shirts start as low as five dollars and because of the name on the brand, your child will forget that it was bought at Wall-Mart and not at a mall. Even though times are tough, a store like Wall-Mart will always thrive.

  17. jaybird24 says:

Even though a recession is a tough time for businesses and the economy, some of the greatest business ideas were launched during a recession. There are many companies that have gone down during this recession but there are some businesses that tend to make more money during the recession. In in an article in the NY times I read that there were few companies that started during a recession such as, Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Burger King, IHOP corp., FedEx Corp., and more. In order for these businesses to start up and be successful they have to have satisfied consumers. The companies need to produce products that consumers will spend their money on and be in good finical state. American need health care because they still get just as sick during a recession which means doctors and nurses will have a profit. In conclusion, businesses and companies will need to produce a product that people will always need so they keep buying it. Therefore, many companies will still be profitable.

  18. j88 says:

Businesses that can succeed during a recession would be businesses dealing with the food industry and the internet. Everyone has to eat so the food industry would never fail. Everything also runs on the internet such as computers, cell phones, and even iPods. Eateries such as Burger King and MacDonald’s have been successful for over fifty years. These companies have opened in more than sixty-five countries and in more than ten thousand locations. Microsoft on the other hand, has earned more than 60 billion dollars in one year. Everyone uses the internet whether it’s Wi-Fi or dial up. Laptops, computers, and most cell phones also have the internet. These two industries will never fail; well at least not anytime soon.

  19. blog22 says:

Even though the recession is said to be over there are still many people without jobs. Losing these jobs meant losing a valuable income, especially for those with kids. Leaving them with no choice but to cut back on annual spending, they resort to discount stores to shop, causing an increase in sales. Business such as Family Dollar have thrived through the recession. Stated in this weeks Wall Street Journal online in an article by Mary Ellen Lloyd Family Dollar Stores Inc.’s fiscal-fourth quarter earnings rose 13% amid improved margins as its focus on basics continued to drive traffic to the discount retailer. These numbers indicate a successful business idea in times of great struggle.

  20. RClapp6014 says:

With just the right ideas, a company can survive, and even prosper, during a recession. As USA Today states, Silicon Valley Bank has stayed afloat due to it’s “prudent business style”, which allows companies and industries to take out loans that are, “backed by the company’s assets”. It seems as if the hard economic times have little negative effect for this company, especially since it is continuing expansion across the world. While avoiding the same traps that other banks have become victims too, the Silicon Valley Bank avoids loaning its funds to financially unstable clients. An intelligent business tactic like this is key for fighting through the struggle of a poor economy.

  21. pymadel says:

Just as much as businesses can fall during recession period, the best business can be made also during that same period of time. From an evaluation of the “HR World Editors”,health and social care is always a great bet. Due to the lack of money at that time, people will get sick by eating unhealthy food, and more sick if they don’t have insurance to pay for preventions of their sickness. Funeral home are making huge money too. As sad as it is, people won’t stop dying, because that period is tense, people are greedy, some are killing others to get money, some are just dying because they cannot afford to pay treatments..Plus insidecrm.com shows that Wal-Mart,and McDonald are still doing great in that recession.I believe that those companies try to please the consumers as much as they can with while they are still making money. Is it obvious that some people are getting richer in the recession, specially when they know what is the best business that can hold on to any recessions.

  22. trosa says:

It is possible to come up with long lasting business during difficult times. Some of the most successful businesses happened during recessions. In order for a business to be successful, it needs to solve a problem, what we have most right now are problems. For example IHOP Corp. first opened up in July1958 in Toluca Lake, California. During the Eisenhower recession, and today it has more than 1,300 locations across the U.S. As a result of this successful business, thousands of people have jobs. New business means new jobs, and when people have a secure income they are more likely to spend money and invest, therefore moving economy forward.

  23. howie amaral says:

An economic recession can be a very hard time for many, but for few it is a very profitable period. Businesses can learn to take advantage of these situations by presenting low cost, bargain-driven products to an obviously needy market. This has proved true for businesses such as Wal-Mart, which in November 2008 reported a 3.4% increase in comparable store sales (“What Recession?” AOL.com). The need for low cost products and the stores variety have proved to be the main reasons for success. If other businesses could devise such a consumer-driven company they may too find a significant sales increase.

  24. avalanche324 says:

It is quit clear that during a recession businesses of any sort, big or small, seem to struggle in some way. However during such hard times some seem to strive and grow! Such major companies as Fed-Ex, CNN, and Burger Kings have been started during a recession, according to insidecrm.com. Today these companies have grown to major Corporations in the everyday use of americans. I believe the success of these companies during such hard times are because of the product and price they are offer. During hard times you want to make everything as cheap and convenient as possible and that is why these companies are recession proof along with many others who have made a great profit during these times.

  25. Matt says:

It is possible to start and maintain being a profitable business even in a long term recession. One example of this is the business known as Method. The company had started in 2006 with annual sales of about fifteen million, but at the end of 2008 they had annual sales of over 100 million. Method is a company that sells cleaning products, however unlike other companies that sell cleaning products, Method’s products contain no harmful chemicals to people or the environment. Using safe chemicals to keep prices low with interesting product design is what makes them so successful. Method’s goal is to help change the way the ‘cleaning chemicals’ business works by using only green ingredients and eventually influencing other companies to do the same.

  26. BridgetheGap says:

Well I can say that a company that is making a difference is Federal Express. I work there currently and if you see how much freight comes in, it’s kind of an amazing sight. Also Fedex was just chosen to be the ones to distribute the h1n1 vaccine throughout the nation. It will be over 10,000 pieces for I believe around five weeks. So is that not profit?

Also a business idea that I noticed from the earlier posts NO ONE mentioned dry cleaning. Dry cleaning is a business that always has a need especially for today’s situation with unemployment. It makes sense because people still need to get their suits cleaned and crisp, people still need clothes etched and stitched or renewed (if dry cleaning does that). The people need this because there are still a vast majority of people going through interview after interview to land a job. You need to look presentable of course, so dry cleaning is definitely my solution to a successful business on all economic levels.

  27. drsouce169 says:

During a recession, any business can be successful. In order to be successful, business owners need to take into consideration the condition of it’s customers and adapt accordingly. Also, any business that offers a cheap, high quality alternative to an existing product/service will do well. For example, one gas station on rt.1 is selling gas well below what its competitors are selling it for, and there is always a steady line of cars, while its competitors are lacking customers. Any business that also creates money for its customers will also do well, for example the Cash for Gold business.

  28. o_san01 says:

There are several companies that are rising because of the recession, such as Aeropostale, Cutco, and Amazon. Aeropastale is on the rise because of pricier competitors like Abercrombie and Fitch and American Eagle; while other retail stores have gone down, Aeropastale revenue has increased 28%. Amazon’s revenue increased 38% due to thrifty consumers that are searching for the lowest price on the Web. Cutco, which is who I work for, has an estimate of 50% increase in sales due to less people eating out and more people eating at home. These companies have gained from this recession because they offer a product and service that saves people money, time, and effort.

  29. Lisa T says:

As my dad always said, anything is possible. During a recessions, you may see business that relate directly to a community purpose such as a food pantry, or programs that may focus on the elderly. In reviewing sites such as SeniorWholeHealth.com, that offer products and services to low income senior we see that vendors and suppliers of thiose kinds of services would always be in demand. As a result of this type of business venture, the elderly will receive the care that is necessary to be safe and have many different vendors that specialize in this population that can offer services for a fee. Depending on the nature of the business and the current and future demand will “make-or-break” a business but could possibly survive as a start up company during a recesion.

  30. itsz-Jniice says:

Many business has had a great launch during recession. There are several business that has a good start in a bad economy, such as pawn shops, auto mechanics, credit repair companies, collection agencies, and movie rental. Even many industries and business generally excepted to see continued sales during a recession such as funeral homes, accountants, health care, drying cleaning, car insurance, etc. Since we are in a recession this is actually a great time to nurture and incubate a small company. Also by having limited capital leads to creative thinking, healthy deliberation about expenditures, and the need for founders to pay very close attention to cash flows, budgets, and balance sheets. So don’t think about it twice to open up a business right now; because this is one of the greatest time to open a business.

  31. cmcdonou05 says:

I believe that a struggling economy can lead to some of the most prosperous yet innovative ideas. I believe that pressure and troubling conditions can force peoples hands in being more creative and unique in their business techniques. In any field of business there is an untapped niche or demographic. Simply put, less financial and person resources, forces a companies hand.

In an era like todays, I think it’s in businesses best interest to more aptly relate to the living conditions of the consumer, who undoubtedly is put under more pressure than ever to save a dollar, while making their own life more enjoyable and convenient.

Free-give away’s usually serve as nothing more than public relations stunts or a way to get a brand out. But when businesses play active roles in the community and donate to causes which effect a wide variety of people, can often breed consumer loyalty which allows for greater flexibility in a business strategy.

  32. JG6691 says:

During a recession the best company to start would be small computer or technology based businesses. The reasons why would be, the recession will force you to be frugal, having limited capital leads to creative thinking. Recessions force entrepreneurs to take another close look at their ideas. The economic downturn will make entrepreneurs question whether there will be a market for this product when consumers are cutting back. Also will it be beneficial to the consumer whether in good or bad economic times? Starting a business in a recession will also create job opportunities to people who will be committed to the product that the entrepreneur is trying to pitch. That means to be willing to take on the risks of the start-up business. These are the people entrepreneurs need on their team. If you are unsure of whether or not you should start now, you should just start because once the economic times turn around your business will be that much further along. This will bring you that much closer to being ready to raise capital which will once again be available, with VC firms eager to invest after sitting on their cash during the down years. You can get a great head start on that day by starting your business now.

  33. vova says:

I think during these rough economic times that the world is facing, i think there is a potential to start a new business. The best place to start a business would be online, more people are subscribing every day to new services to gain internet access. Millions of people surf the web everyday and the target market would be people that are online constantly seeing advertisement posted everywhere about different companies. Very successful people gained a lot of income, for example twitter was founded in 2006 but not recognized globally until 2009. Twitter is now worth millions of dollars due to its advertisement posts.

  34. cmurphy03 says:

One business/business idea that does well and i think will continue to do well during tough economic times is both large and small discount retailers. While tough economic times limit spending, retailers who offer a significant discount in the price ofgoods often are chosen over other retailers. In an article by Newser.com, Wal-Mart’s net income rose to 3.45 billion in 2008 from 2.95 billion. This increase in income coincided with a 17% increase in profit. This shows that people would like to save money during rough economic time rather purchase luxury goods with well known name brands.

  35. kigwekal01 says:

There are a few businesses that very profitable even though were facing the worst recession since the Great Depression;People who work in the health care department , tax department, and people who work in retail stores. Also, people who work at Wall Street who sells trades and securities to businesses all around the United States. If future entrepreneurs are going to start a business, they should design a business plan that can grab attention to people who are interested to be employed for your business. Businesses will be successful as long as you follow the rules and regulations of the business and continue to benefit customers around the city.

  36. sammydog says:

Large and Small businesses alike are in the same position when it comes to these hard economic times. But, they differ in the way that small businesses have a harder time keeping their heads above the water when it comes to a recession. Nevertheless, some businesses seem to have no problem staying alive because of the demands for them. According to Network Solution, businesses like moving companies are staying alive through this recession because the more people have to forclose on their homes, the more these people are having to move and sell their belongings. Although some small businesses are going under in this recession, some small businesses seem to have a good handle on the liferaft!

  37. oacholon01 says:

Despite the economic crisis, there are still a few stores who thinks of the society and their needs and then tries to fit into their budget.During recession people rather buy what they can afford and leave the inexpensive ones for example market basket, stop and shop, price is right.these stores i personally do think they fit into the consumers budget with these current recession.

  38. ttaayytaayy says:

If you do a little research, you will find that some of the greatest business ideas were launched during a recession. Remember that solving society’s problems can be profitable! Can you find companies that are doing just that this time around?

Many businesses obviously fail during a recession. The business is not selling enough products to be making a profit; therefore the business can’t keep going. There are also some businesses that have started during a recession. After taking some time looking up some businesses that were started during a recession, I was surprised with how many and what businesses came up. “The Hyatt opened its first hotel’s doors at the Los Angeles International Airport during the Eisenhower recession (1957 to 1958).” Burger King Corp. began in 1954 during another recession in 1957. CNN started in the recession-plagued 1980. Looking at all these companies and corporations started in recessions is crazy to me because all of these businesses are some of the biggest business there are today.

  39. bellisimax3 says:

I believe that technology based businesses will continue to succeed during a recession. They are convenient, and easy to use. According to article base, “Online businesses are simple and inexpensive to start up and can be very profitable if done right.” Also a lot of computer repair businesses will succeed. The world is now run by technology, while schooling as well as many jobs require computers. Seeing as people can not keep their computers from crashing, they will continue to need to spend money on the repairs. According to Malicious Intent’s articles, computer repairing businesses are recession proof.

  40. amielf says:

It is possible to start a business during recession. A business like Method started during recession and it’s been thriving since then. It is said that a good reason to start a business during recession was there is less competition, low costs and easier to recruit new employees. The only thing needed to be successful in a time like recession is to have enough funds and be creative in marketing your methods.

  41. jones123 says:

Companies are still able to generate more profits during the recession. Companies like Anheuser-Busch , are reporting solid figures of profit. Everyone is pissed off with the hard times we are going through, so people continue to “hit the booze” to escape the hard times. If you can find the right clientelle base your business should have no trouble succeeding.

  42. sblanchette says:

To me it seems that a depression offers a great chance for a small business to grow. A depression is kind of like a wild fire, bear with me here, after the fire has moved through and the embers have burned out there are a lot of nutrients that were put back in the soil. The fire also burns down a lot of the older and bigger trees allowing new younger saplings to grow in there place. When the bigger trees burn down they put all there nutrients(employees, and customers) back on the market for the small business to take over and use for themselves. I know this example is a stretch but it seems to work in my head. I currently work for a company that was able to survive the depression and it had grown to be one of the more well know supermarkets in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Market Basket. They were able to survive the depression by offering there customers lines of credit, a very risky thing to do during a depression, but this allowed the owners to build a trust between themselves and the customers. At this time today Market Basket had about 61 stores in Mass and NH.

  43. jthomas01 says:

The recession seems to be effecting a lot of business’s but i think business’s with many franchises are not seeing a lost or atleast not as much. In the wall street journal Wal-mart firscal third quarter earnings rose 3.2%. When you have a retailer with so many stores that does good in business before the recession there wont be much of a change during the recession. There might be a little loss but there were also be rises as well, so I believe opening up a store with a well known retailer you can make profits during a recession.

  44. Nerinea says:

Even during a recession there is always going to be a need for something. Lately everyone wants something that is fuel efficient or uses less energy to save money and “help the earth.” Companies such as GE have been putting out energy efficient washers and dryers. These are thing which that everyone needs but fear their energy bill due to the fact that they are large, cumbersome machines. Businesses that come out with items the people need and have an element that makes them more appealing such as the Energy Star sticker or a certain MPG on their car.

  45. CVAZ01 says:

In a recession, there are always opportunities one can create through careful analyzing of the needs of the potential consumer. Personally, I think that one business that could prosper in these trying times would be a carpool service company. With gas prices on the rise yet again, cutting down on the cost of transportation is an enormous positive thing the consumer can do to ease the mind and lighten the wallet. For a nominal fee, you would be able to have transportation to and from said destination without burning the bank account.

  46. jadeypoo says:

On hrworld.com it announces a handful of jobs to seek during the recession that are recession proof. Some include;accounting, healthcare, government, etc. One on the list caught my eye inparticular. The job was debt collectors. In the recession alot of people can be in debt which is most of the time. For instance, people fall behind on payments cause their boss cut their hours due to budget cuts. People start using credit cards and it just continues a cycle. Fidelitydebt.net offers to lower debts by 73% right now. Which is pretty good. Also, department stores such as Walmart and target are offering more for your money during the recessions.

Yes, it is possible to start a successful business despite the conditions of a recession. In fact, many companies have become very successful despite the country being in a recession. Businesses such as, according to Gary Beach, NBER dates, AT&T and General Motors have been able to strive even in the recession. I would assume that businesses continue to make profits during a recession because the cost of labor, rent, and other resources are much cheaper at this time. Opening a profitable business is entirely possible during a recession if your business solves a problem that the masses face.

yeah we may be in a difficult economic time right now, but america is still the land of opportunity. If you have a good idea it can still go a long way. with the right kind of education and training you can do anything. and there are also jobs that tend to never fail like health care. people are always going to be sick and need someone to treat them. also people like accountants are doing quite well even though it seems like there is no money alot of people still need guidance on what to do with there money. so even though the economy is bad i still believe that people can succeed.

On a reccesion bussinesses that help people save money is the key. Thrift Stores always have profit and in though times even more. also transportation companies. In fact I know people that instead of car pooling began a tranportation bussiness using their own vehicles at the begining, charging very affordable prices. Thid is very usefull specially for parents of school age kids that also have babies at home and driving back and fourth is little of a hussle but at the same time are in a tight budget.
